Come Monday...Prime Suspect

Come Monday…” is a weeklyseries that will involve a review of, or commentary about,  websites, movies, documentaries, televisionshows, sports, music, and whatever else may tickle my fancy at the time.  Be assured that these reviews will begenerally positive, as in accordance to the Jimmy Buffett song “Come Monday.”  This is subject to change, however.  In fact, I would be most derelict in myduties to neglect going on a rant every once in a while.  For rants promote change, and change can begood—right?  Therefore, since good isgenerally considered as being a positive force in 99.3% of the paralleluniverses that I am aware of, even a rant could be considered as beingsomething positive, and a genuine hissy-fit would be even better (so I’m told).

[PrimeSuspect] is a new show on [NBC] this fall season.  It usually airs on Thursday nights, but itlooks like a repeat of the previous Thursday night episode will be also airingon Monday nights.

Tobe honest about it, I don’t know why.  Infact, I don’t know how such a suspect show made it into NBC’s primetime lineupat all.  That is, unless someone madesome crack about NBC being the pro-police network at some after-hours partyfilled with hard-core Aquarian New-Agers. For it is about as anti-police as the [Law & Order] series were/arepro-police.

Itstars [Maria Bello] as [Det. Jane Timoney], who is perfect for the part.  For she seems to naturally exude hostilityfrom every pore of her rather beautiful body, and in this role, she has apersonality that should make even the most serious New Yorker shake their headin dismay.

Perhapsyou may remember her from her roles as the saloon owner in [Coyote Ugly], or as TomStall’s wife in [A History of Violence]. Well, she was as sweet and understanding as one can be in those roles incomparison to who she is portraying in Prime Suspect.

Yes,she is made to look more sympathetic by being surrounded by an all-boys clubdetective squad, but all this did for me is make the New York City PoliceDepartment depicted in this show look like a bunch of idiots, who spent most ofthe three episodes that I have seen so far sabotaging each other’s effortsbefore finally managing to solve the crime before the end-credits roll.

No,I don’t think I will be tuning in again, but the show does have some potential toget better.  After all, I don’t see howit could get much worse.

Ohyeah, I almost forgot.  There is onebright spot to the show.  For Jane’sfather is being played by [Peter Gerety], who I loved as a rather ornery judgeon [The Wire].

(SpamOn Saturdays)”  segment before, but itjust wasn’t working for me.  Therefore, that will be replaced by a republishing of one of the Trib articles.

[Most Disturbing] contains what I consider to be a most disturbing ad for the new TNTsmart phone app.

[“Where No One Has Gone Before” and Musings on the Next Generation of Star Trek]contains some observations from Lavender Darwin, and you can probably guesswhere that’s going.

[Hitler and…the University of Phoenix?] has Lavender providing us with a fairly entertainingmovie clip.

[Shaun(a) White Gum!] has Lavender displaying a sense-of-humor that no one should eversee while sober.

[A Tale of Two Tonys] has me anguishing over the future of my beloved DallasCowboys.

[There is nothing in the world worse than…] has Lavender providing more devastatingramifications to having a vasectomy.

[‘Anonymous’ Movie] contains a clip and some poignant commentary from Lavender about themovie.

[Steve Taylor – Meat The Press] contains the video to one of Lavender’s favoritetunes.

[Steve Jobs, Billboards, Beatles, Yoko, Beer, Smoking and C.S. Lewis] is from Lavenderabout Steve Jobs, billboards, The Beatles, Yoko Ono, smoking and C.S. Lewis.

[Fred Phelps, Westboro Baptist and Vasectomies!] has Lavender musing about a few ofhis favorite things.

Firstof all, I would like to make it absolutely clear that my wife and I are both HUGEfans of [Mike & Molly].  Mike isplayed to the hilt by [Billy Gardell], and [Melissa McCarthy] more than holdsher own playing Molly.

I’mnot quite sure if it is the chicken or the egg, but since we were alreadyfamiliar with Melissa from Mike & Molly, I am going to go with it being onaccount of her success on that show that secured her place on [Bridesmaids].  Yes, I well aware of the fact that movies areoften completed years before their actual release, but this is my story, whichI am sticking to.

Anyway,my wife still wants to see Bridesmaids in the worst possible way, but afterhearing it described as [The Hangover] for chicks, I am having somereservations.  After seeing Melissa on[SNL] last Saturday, my wife is starting to have some of the same reservations.

Link: [On NBC]

Yeah,I know that gross-out humor rules the roost these days, but that doesn’t makeit funny.  Be assured that Melissa wasplaying anti-Molly there, and I suspect that she was also playing her inBridesmaids.  Oh, how I hope Melissawasn’t just being herself.

Mywife and I have also been HUGE fans of [Andy Rooney] on [60 Minutes] over theyears.  For we thought that he was justemploying a very dry sense-of-humor to moan and groan about things that make alot of us moan and groan about, but after watching that parting interview, itwould seem that he is really not a very nice man at all.

Hence, the dangers of overexposure.  For my wifeand I now have very different opinions about both Melissa McCarthy and AndyRooney, which we wouldn’t have had if they had of just stayed with the “less ismore” rule.

Come Monday...Harry's Law

“Come Monday…” is a weekly series that will involve a review of, or commentary about,  websites, movies, documentaries, television shows, sports, music, and whatever else may tickle my fancy at the time.  Be assured that these reviews will be generally positive, as in accordance to the Jimmy Buffett song “Come Monday.”  This is subject to change, however.  In fact, I would be most derelict in my duties to neglect going on a rant every once in a while.  For rants promote change, and change can be good—right?  Therefore, since good is generally considered as being a positive force in 99.3% of the parallel universes that I am aware of, even a rant could be considered as being something positive, and a genuine hissy-fit would be even better (so I’m told).

There have been times when some of the voices in my head have told me that I am not nearly as cool as I would like to believe that I am. Okay, it has sounded like ALL of them at other times, but that’s beside the point—isn’t?

One of those times involved [Ally McBeal]. For it became wildly popular with the masses long before I warmed up to it, and I never did warm up to [The Practice].

I caught on with [Boston Legal] a lot quicker. After all, one of main characters was played by [William Shatner], and I am not a [hater].

Even if I must say so myself, I have to be about the coolest of beans now. For I started looking forward to the newest [David E. Kelley] masterpiece the first time I saw a promo for it, and it has lived up to all of my expectations so far.

The show I am talking about is [Harry’s Law], which can be seen on [NBC] at 10:00 PM Eastern/9:00 PM Central on Monday nights. It stars [Kathy Bates], with a fine supporting cast of [Brittany Snow], [Nathan Corddy], [Aml Ameen], [Johnny Ray Gill], and as the ultimate tool, [Paul McCrane]. If you can’t make it there on Monday nights, you can see full episodes on [Hulu] anytime.

Yeah, [Misery] still gives me nightmares, and if they ever have Kathy Bates handling a sledgehammer for any reason, it just might finish me off. Harry’s Law appears to be worth the risk, however. For it is every bit as quirky as Boston Legal, and her role as Mama Boucher in [The Waterboy] helped to ease some of my fears.

No, it doesn’t hurt a thing that Brittany Snow is not at all hard to look at, and she is perfect in her role as a ditzy blonde with a little sumpthin’ sumpthin’ deep down inside. Nonetheless, I do find her thing for shoes a little disturbing.

All in all, I highly recommend this show to anyone who wants a little break from reality. Of course, some of you might feel right at home there. I would rather not name any names, but if you insist…

Come Monday...NBC's Outlaw

My wife and I watched the premier of [Outlaw] on [NBC], and it left us both with a, “Well…” Not that it was a bad show—quite to the contrary, actually, but as [Charlton Heston’s] character in [True Lies] might say, “It just didn’t blow our skirts up.” (Yeah, I guess you would’ve had to have been there.)

Anyway, the show signals the return of [Jimmy Smits] to NBC, and I am afraid that it will go about as well as [Cane] did for him a few years back. For Cane only lasted for the modern equivalent of one full season of thirteen episodes, and this was on [USA].

Maybe he just keeps getting hooked up with the wrong directors and writers? For after a brilliant run on [NYPD Blue], nothing he has done on television has lasted very long.

Yes, it could be argued that his work on [The West Wing] lasted quite a while. After all, he had a part in 35 episodes, and he was the main character in a great many of them. On the other hand, the show came to an end when it was his turn to take over for [Martin Sheen].

I suppose the problem that I have with much of Jimmy Smits’ acting is that it often looks like he is acting. For I have a hard time viewing him as actually being the character he is portraying.

As in regards to Outlaw not impressing us as much as we had hoped, it might be because of trying to cover too much ground in a single episode. For they went from showing Garza (Smits’ character) as being a fairly free-spirited gambler to resigning from the [United States Supreme Court] because of both political and moral pressure to starting a crusade to right the wrongs that have been ignored (and even supported) by the judicial system. Hey, just the circumstances surrounding his resignation could be enough for at least several episodes, but they may be planning on using this to keep us coming back.

So, if you saw it, what did you think? Am I just being too particular over nothing or does this show really not have what it takes to help break our addiction to reality shows?
