Travel and food tripping in Pangasinan

PB230670
PB261482 PB261219

I haven't posted anything yet about my travel and food adventures during my 4 days stay in Lingayen, Pangasinan, my first plan is to post in different topics and according to schedules in my blog, but you see here that travel and food are always together and whenever we travel, we always eat and try new food in a place were we are first timers. Here is my collection of my food adventures in Pangasinan, although not a food tour of some sort, but it serves as a teaser for me on what are the popular ones and specialty in Pangasinan, there are lots of food in Pangasinan and my stay is kinda short and I want to go back there again just to roam around and eat new food. Thanks to Vanj Padilla for inviting to their 1st Pangasinan Digital ICT Congress, it was an honor to be one of the speaker of the ICT congress.

Here's my foodie adventure
First welcome food- Breakfast in Capitol Resort

PB230076
This is our 1st meal after we arrive, a nice breakfast at Capitol Resort in Lingayen, Pangasinan, I tried tasting the dried and fried espada fish and the Alaminos longganisa. The longganisa have a weird appearance because there's toothpicks on it that serves as a lock to the longganisa, they used that stick instead of a thread that normally we have in the grocery.

Trying the street foods
PB230354
Street food are the joys of eating for me, I love to eat street foods! But before I eat one, I make sure that it is clean and free from germs. I checked on the street vendors by the beach in Lingayen,  and our student tour guide told us that it is clean and all vendors who are present by the beach have permits from the local office of the mayor.

PB230361
Here's my first try of a street food in Lingayen, the Chicken meat in a stick

PB230364
The smell is yummy, and the concept of using the vinegar as your dip is yummy also, but then I got disappointed that the taste is not okay, I mean..the chicken is cooked but not that crispy, then I realized that the flour used for breading the chicken cooked so fast and not the entire chicken inside it. I was expecting a crunchy chicken on a stick.

PB230367
Now this is the Bitso Bitso, I only hear the word Bitso in some folk song, and then our blogger friend Orlee told me that in Manila they call it Carioca, then after I taste and ate one piece in a stick, I told them that it tastes like Pilipit and Maruya. Its just a dough fried on a stick with sugar......in other words..its like a doughnut ball on a stick. I enjoyed eating this bitso bisto, bought it from a roaming vendor carrying this in a bilao.

Lingayen Gulf
PB230474
I'm here at the Lingayen Gulf, one of the famous and longest shorelines here in our country, the gulf is popular as Gen. McArthur made his historic landing here during World War 2, after his famous word "I shall return!" meaning that he will back to our country to help us defeat the invading Japanese empire.

Dinner in Capitol Resort
PB230544
I forgot to snap a photo of our food at Capitol Resort, it was a BBQ and Sinigang na Bangus night. I was with Vince and blogger friends, and JV of Inquirer.net and Coy of Globe. After the meal , Vanj and her team and also friends from the local office gave a short guided night tour around the Capital and inside the Captiol building.

Wet, boneless and dried fish
PB230734
The wet market in Dagupan city reminds me of that Taboan market in Cebu City. Here in a wet market in Dagupan City, they sell all kinds of dried fish and boneless bangus fish in low prices, I just can't believe that a boneless bangus is priced as low as P45. and one plastic bag of espada fish is around P200. Also a popular product here is the bagoong. I saw lots of Manilenos shopping around and hoarding lots of dried fish, bangus and bagoong.

PB230733
Tuyo, grab all you can

PB230747
boneless Bangus

PB230751
fresh Bangus fish

Puto in Dagupan City
PB230784
They say that the most yummiest puto is here in Pangasinan, here's a teaser for myself when I tried this Calasiao puto in Dagupan City. Small rounded white puto so yummy and it melts easily in my mouth. Then I discovered that the puto city is in Calasiao, Pangasinan, a few drive away from Dagupan.

Street bibingka in Dagupan City
PB230786
I love bibingka, and its my favorite food every Christmas season, I remember last year that I always buy bibingka everyday in our peryahan here in our village, then here in Dagupan City, I got a chance to taste on how their bibingka tastes like.

PB230794
The taste is heavenly...why is it that street food always comes an awesome taste. If puto tastes better..then you should try some of their kakanins. Bibingka is so smooth from the inside.

Sinigang na Malang fish of Capitol Cafe
PB240808
Here's our lunch for day 2 in Pangasinan, I first tasted this Malang fish here, it looks like a Tilapia fish but it got a bigger body with lots of fish meat. Malang fish emits a strong fishy smell, I think it came from a fish pen and not from the wild. Although that it comes with a strong fishy odor, the taste is good and perfect for a sinigang soup with veggies. The body of the Malang fish is like a body of a zebra with black stripes.

Bella's Calasiao puto factory in Calasiao, Pangasinan
PB251039
Day 3 - me and my room mates in the resort, Jinkee, Orlee, Mac, Bam, and John decided to have a street tour around Pangasinan, since my room mates are leaving that day, they got the idea of shopping some local food, then we got a tip to try and visit Bella's puto factory in Calasiao, Pangasinan. I didn't expected that the jeep ride is sooooooooooooooo slow in the highway, we arrived in Calasiao after 2 hours of SLOWWWWWWWWWW travel all the way from Lingayen, Pangasinan. We decided to rent that Dagupan-Calasiao jeep to drive us to Bella's puto factory and then drive us back to Calasiao road.
Its a long ride, but the sight and experience in the puto factory is awesome!

PB251048
Here's a Bella's version of Tikoy! so soft, sweet and you can tell that the rice is crushed in its finest form.

PB251059
The owners of Bella's treated us a free eat all you can Calasiao puto! here's to breakfast at 10am!

PB251078
Bam tried picking up the soft puto from the steamer, it was hard to remove it, and then we saw one of the factory staff did a demo in front of us and he removed 20 putos in less than 5 seconds???

PB251090
my blogger friends told me to try it and have a photo, I told them I just want to have a photo op with the famous celebrity of Calasiao....the puto!

PB251069
Blogger friends with the owners of Bella's

Breakfast in El Puerto Marina Beach Resort and Spa
PB261219
Day 4 and last day - I forgot to try and eat the food offered in the resort we stayed in, the waiters told me that their best seller is the Lingayen Pinakbet, I told them I'll try it on the next day. And on the next morning, I ordered a nice omelette breakfast  at 630am in the morning, I ate it while I check my email, I was suppose to order the pinakbet after it, but then our tour bus arrived so early, I missed the chance to taste it but I promised that I'll be back there soon.

my 2nd visit in Hundred Islands
PB261424
This is my 2nd visit in Hundred Islands, I was here last 2005 and I can tell that the beauty of the island was nearly gone after I saw it again this 2011. I thought that I'll enjoy my visit, but then all I did was to complain why they installed a boating dock in the Childrens Island, now the dock is damaged by the Pedring typhoon and the look now is not like a dock, its like a damaged bridge during the world war.

But still, there are some moments that I enjoyed my visit...looking at the small islands and enjoy the sunny rays in the middle of the ocean.

PB261367
Here's my photo on top of Governors Island. hahahaa. I conquered you again, but this time I am totally prepared! I brought water with me hahahaha.

PB261338
The Nestle Pinipig cruch ice cream sold here is 150% higher than those sold here in our sari saris store in Cavite. Its so weird that you have no choice to buy it for a P75 pesos if you want to cool down after a long boat ride or island trek.

Lunch in a Kaleskesan carinderia
PB261487
After the tour around Pangasinan, Vanj treated us to a nearby carideria along the highway of Lingayen, we tried this famour "kaleskes" food. Vanj told us that this food is an energizer meal to farmers and fishermen. The kaleskes is composed of cow's meat and internal organs chopped and cooked with a yummy soup and  blood of the cow. It tastes like bulalo, but yummier.

PB261485
here's the kaleskes..... all soup and under it are the meat
must try food if you are in Pangasinan, I also heard about that pigar pigar food, but I told them that I'll try it once I visit the city again. Then I asked what's in a  pigar pigar, then they said its a carabao meat, and then told them that ohhh I have tasted carabao meat already, they are the tastiest meat ever! my town in Sampaloc, Quezon usually cook this every festival, one of the best is the calderetang carabao.

PB261482
I forgot the name of this food...
but I heard its a "kilawing kambing", its like a slightly steamed raw goat meat  with some chilis. Yummy and tasty! best to eat it with a ice cold beer or Coca-Cola.

This is the end of my little travel and food adventure, hope that I can post more here in my blog every Monday for my Travel and Lifestyle Monday post. I still have more here in my HD, I still got some photos and story to share from my La Union trip. So kita kits again and thanks for reading my post.

Must try this Chicken Delish by annalyn.net

Chicken Delish

I heard that the Soderno at Molito is very successful, the weekend lifestyle market in Alabang is making an appearance through the online waves already and also it mentions this new food and brought us here to Annalyn.net food project - the Chicken Delish, she mention in her blog that she cook and prepare this only for her family and now she decided to serve and offer Linkit here in Soderno at Molito.

I'm very curious and I want to taste the chicken, I have tried lots of styles of chicken wings and drums (even my wife's own cooking) and now I placed this food on my list of "must try food before the year ends", need to add this in my taste buds right away and I'm sure there's a unique and special taste that comes with the Chicken Delish.

o ayan Annalyn..abangan mo ko sa next weekend haha

Blog feature: Big Bad Wolf restaurant in Bonifacio Global City

PA264415PA264387 PA264344
PA264457 PA264405
I visited this new restaurant that opened in the vast space of Global City and I’ve been hearing about this resto called Big Bad Wolf in online via web blog and Facebook. I became curious because of the name and title of the restaurant, its so playful and sound naughty. Then I realize that this kind of restaurant with a unique name and have great food should be added as one of the rarest and best kept secret foodie hub in Manila. I visited the place and the resto is sitting at the back of the Fairways Tower in the corner of 5th ave of Global City and Mckinley hills road, the place is near if you are coming from EDSA.

I got in touch with one of the owner Neil Paras, we communicated via SMS after a referral from a friend that is also a friend to the owner of the resto. My resto visit was supposed to be Thursday, but we mixed up our sched and we both agree that I’ll visit the resto on a Wednesday because I’m already in Manila and I’m near Global City. After a taxi ride, I got a hard time looking for that building, but then I saw that the building is really located in the corner of 5th ave and Mckinley, I went around the building and saw the Big Bad Wolf! (More story below)

At first I thought that the restaurant is like wine depot or something, because the first thing that caught my eye after entering the Big Bad Wolf is their wine bar on the left, but then I looked at the right and saw some tables, chairs, paintings, book rack and sofas, then I met Neil Paras and I was shocked to see how you he is, then I met his two other co-owners of the resto Mac Cunanan and Ponch Del Rosario. All three guys are so young and now they manage and put up a big resto. I asked Ponch why they named it Big Bad Wolf, he just said that they didn’t got a nice name to give for the resto, but the word Big Bad Wolf is quite catchy and will give curiosity to people. I think I took the bite and here I am inside Big Bad Wolf.

I asked Neil how they started and how did they meet, then he told me that they met since they were kids, up to high school and college, and the idea started during those Counter Strike network gaming in college days, would you believe that ? awesome! Gaming and FPS bring smart people together and transform them into entrepreneurs! Galeng!

It was a long chat with the Big Bad Wolf trio and it was fun to meet them in person and I found out that the restaurant is not just a venue for eating, but also a venue for having fun! I noticed that they have board games kept under the tables near the sofa, There’s a Monopoloy card game, Boggle, Snake and Ladders, Pictory Man and Othello game. Niel told me that they want the resto to be a venue for friends who want to meet up, relax and play some board games. It was a fun idea that they added that featured attraction in Big Bad Wolf, I like it very much because I like games and having fun, so I told Niel that on my next visit, I’ll donate some of the unopened board games that I have at home, I have this pinoy made board game and I just don’t have the time to study it and play it with the family. There’s also another feature of the resto, it is also a home for artists, the wall serves as a mini gallery for aspiring painters, illustrators, photographers and visual artists. They display some paintings up for sale and according to Niel that they offer the resto a gallery to start up artists who want to expose their art to the public and also have a gallery that will run for a month, people can buy and reserve the artworks on display. After this conversation, Niel invited me to join and put up some artworks for display and for sale, I told him that I just collect comic book and toys, and then he said that the book, toy and vintage item shelves will be opened for me.. oh wow! Then I told him that I have a network of toy art designers, this will be helpful for them, maybe I’ll organize a mini event here in the future featuring our local underground artists.

During the conversation, Ponch and Mac told me to order food, because my agenda there is to check out the resto and try out their food, then Neil told me that I can order anything that I want, but then I told them that I don’t want to order many food and I might not even finish them all and not enjoy it due to a heavy tummy, I told them that they suggest and prepare the best and specialty food of Big Bad Wolf. That’s a challenge for them and then they showed me their menu and I saw the prices of each meal and found out that the price is very affordable for a new resto.

here are the food of Big Bad Wolf

PA264352

PA264365

This is one lovely pasta for me. I love poached eggs in the morning and for my snacks in the afternoon, but this poached egg on top of the carbonara pasta is a marriage of morning, snacks and lunch. The poched egg add a creamy fill on the carbonara sauce.

PA264377

PA264387
Santol-Smoked Pork Belly

This is the best food ever! A great food discovery and this should be placed in a giant billboard. The Santol-Smoked Pork Belly is a must try here in Big Bad Wolf. Its like magic, after eating that pork belly, you automatically smell and digest a santol like flavor and after taste. If you will visit this resto, you must try this! I'm sure you'll walk away with a smiley face after eating.

PA264393
Smoked Salmon and Waffle
Smokedd Salmon, Waffles, Tomato-Jalapeno Cream
Php 270

The resto is opened starting at 3pm, you can try this Smoked Salmon and Wafle as your snacks in the afternoon, and while you finish chatting in Facebook or downloading a torrent (the resto has WIFI access!) you can order a heavy meal in companion of your food adventure.

PA264394
Malongo coffee

Syempre! I need a hot coffee to digest all of my food in my tummy, Neil told me to choose one kind of Malongo coffee set here in the box. Each coffee has its own strong or mild coffee taste. I tried the La Tierra coffee and the taste is just fine and not too strong.

Big Bad Wolf is just starting up and they shared to me that the new addition of food was added because they started opening the resto at 3pm, its a schedule for snack time so there are some set of meal that are light and healthy. They told me that some of their customers are people who finished their gym workout or running practice. In the future, if the flow of customer is okay, they might open early and offer breakfast soon. I find the set of food they prepared to me are very unique, tasty, very original and its easy to brand it that you can only eat this in Big Bad Wolf. At night the resto was visited by some office people who want to relax, dine in, drink and have fun, as Miki told me, one of their friend, the the place is evil (or bad) as the name Big Bad Wolf will glue you to its seat and enjoy the company of good food and your friends.

I hope that next time they can have more set of meals, I find the carbonara pasta lack some sauce, but I know that the sauce might depend on the poached egg, but I'm very new to it and haven't enjoyed it much, I'm a pasta lover and encountering an old recipe with a new style will trick my mind and also my taste buds, maybe if I'll order it I'l request to add more carbonara sauce.

My wife told me if the place is KID FRIENDLY, I told her that the resto is very kid friendly, we can visit the resto next time and bring our one year old kid to dine with us there, my boy loves pasta, so I might order the Chorizo Spaghetti on my next visit. I guess going there in the afternoon and dinner time is okay for people who dine in with their kids. I'm not sure the ambiance of the resto at around night time and late night, I'm sure the young and old adults are active in dining and drinking, I'm sure its a safe place to visit and I'm glad that the building has a big parking space.

PA264450
Thanks to the Big Bad Wolf trio for inviting me to try their food and discover another resto that is worth visiting.
