Top 10 high tech and fun toys for kids this Christmas 2011
ABS CBN's Matanglawin contacted me and they asked to help them compile a list of high tech and cool toys that are popular as gifts this Christmas 2011. I listed the toys that are available here in the Philippines, and one of the best sellers in our local toy stores and also new toys that are fit not only for kids but also for adults. New toy designs with cool tech and features now attracts the adult and teens category, some toys are no longer just for kids, but also a toys for older people.
I went to the toy holiday sale few weeks ago and many people are looking for Baby Alive toy dolls, while others are looking for the Leapfrog Leap Pad tablet, the scene of consumers hoarding some toys are very common every Christmas season, in the US, the Black Friday shop event went crazy, people race on to get a discounted Ps3, Xbox and Rock on Elmo. Here in the Philippines, buyers are very wise now in buying toys as gifts for their younglings, they know about holiday toy sale, warehouse toy sale, bazaars, and also our event the 6th annual Christmas Toy Fair, our biggest toy fair event every Christmas in the Philippines targetting hobbyist and toy collectors. With these toy sale events popping every Christmas season, buyers took the advantage on visiting these events and get cool discount prices, some toy distributors also release some new toys that aren't yet available here, while others release the outdated, old and classic toys that are no longer available, so they target customers who buy new toys and customers who are the hard core toy collectors who collects classic and rare toys...hey I saw that Jackie Chan action figure toy and aww I don't have money that time and its a cheap P800 pesos figure that can match the size and quality of a Hot toys action figure (never mind the head sculpt)
Okay I'll stop this intro and head on to the toys of the season.
so here's my list
1. Leapfrog LeapPad
http://www.leapfrog.com/
Php 7k
I'm amazed by this Leapfrog Leap Pad tablet, and they were released just in the right time in this age of computer tablets. At a price of P7k, you can have a cool educational gadget or toy for your younglings, they can play games, read stories, watch educational animated shorts, coloring activity, and many more. Its like taking home the whole Sesame Street and Batibot brunch to your home. You can download some apps that can add more app softwares for your tablet, some apps are free while others need to be bought online. I haven't tried this Leap pad, but I heard that you can surf the internet and take photos and video using the small camera embeded on the Leap Pad's body.
This toy won the Platinum AWard from the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio last Sept. 2011.

2. Rock on Elmo
http://rockonelmo.com/
Php 5k
Rock on Elmo (or Let's Rock! Elmo) came here in our toy store's shelves last November 2011, I saw this in one of the popular toy stores and It was the awesome Elmo toy line ever. Elmo now in rockstar mode can sing and move like a real pupppet and it performs after pressing a hidden button on Elmo's hand, its like an electonic puppet that talks to you and its mouth moves while talking (similar also to that electronic Cookie Monster that talks and chomps cookie). Rock on Elmo has a lot of preset quotes, music and song, one of the most popular is his theme song "Elmo's world". You can borrow Elmo's microphone, guitar and tambourine, you can play with it while Elmo rocks on, and you can also dress up Elmo by placing those musical intruments, press the button and see how he uses the instruments. My mom in the US bought one toy from the Black Friday madness last month and this will be shipped today and arrive here after Christmas. My son Ash will be happy to see a new edition of Elmo, we own the Elmo Xtreme toy, but this new Rock on Elmo is very enjoyable to play with.

3. AR Drone
http://ardrone.parrot.com/
Php 25k
pic via http://www.geekalerts.com
I saw the AR Drone first in an international tech event and launch, the first catch here is that you can control this flying drone with your iPhone or iPad, but I'm glad that AR Drone developers already included a wifi control for Android phones. It can stay connect up to 50 meters and fly around with the use of your own smart phone, there's camera included in the AR Drone and you can watch the live camera feed to your smart phone and see the terrain infront of it, you can operate the drone even on a blind spot. I got surprised that Toy Kingdom sells this AR Drone only in their SM Megamall branch with a tag price of P25k. I tried a demo there and it was an awesome toy and must have for geeks.
You can also play with other AR drone users, as the brand says that it is also a flying video game, the game mode features an augmented reality capability, each AR Drone in game mode, has an AR laser that can hit other AR drones during a game battle mode. Other hobbyist install a Go Pro camera on top and uses the AR drone in spying or looking on a birds eye view level around them, perfect for camera hobbyist and travelers if they want to see the view on a high area and records it.
If ever I have a complete gadget from my want list in my bag, then I will definitely buy this Ar Drone.

4. Solar RC car
http://www.chinatopwin.com/
P900
pic via toybase.com
I bought this Solar RC car in Toy Kingdom few months, I got a little impressed on the features that this Solar RC car uses solar energy from the sun to charge its own batteries. You can also use a USB to charge this using your laptop's energy. Charging mode is around 2 hours and it gives a complete 15 minutes full charge.
Solar panel is on top of the car, the remote control charges if you connect it to the car and you can just leave it in your window every morning and let the sun juiced up the solar cells and batteries and play with it later. No more worries in buying rechargeable batteries. I just wish that they can invent a high capacity battery that can run for an hour.
The atomic battery of the Mars rover is good candidate for Rc car batteries hahahah
5. Spynet video watch
http://www.amazon.com/Spy-Net-
Php 3.5k
pic via http://u.lasoo.com.au
Some kids play around as James Bond or a secret agent, I do play sometimes as a spy or GI JOE soldier during my youngling times, but this generation, kids love to play like Ben 10 or Spy Kids. This cool toy gadget called Spynet video watch is not your ordinarty wrist watch, this watch can record 4 hours of video and take 2000 photos using its own camera. The toy brand Realtech invents lots of cool spy toy gadgets, one of the most popular toy gadgets are the Spynet nightvision watch. Years ago, I thought that these toys are fake and just for fun, I didn't even know that they do perform well and a must have for toy geeks and camera geeks like me.
I'm going to buy this one and replace my old James Bond watch with this Spynet video watch ( yeah I do have a real James Bond watch that I wear sometimes). I can even use this videowatch in my blogging activities too.

6. Simon Flash
http://www.hasbro.com/shop/details.cfm?R=9E2EEEE9-5056-900B-10F1-2FC65444A628:en_US
Php 1.9k
Simon Flash is the new edition for the stacking game, you know those plastic cups and kids used to stack them into pyramid and unstack them again. This Simon Flash is another version, but not a stacking game, you need to place the colors into the right order, the cube lights up and orders you to arrange the cube by its color order.
Its a memory game and good game for Christmas party and family night games at home.

7. Robot dino - Kota and Pals Hatchlings / Dino-Roars
http://www.amazon.com/
around 3k Php yata
At first I thought that these toys are real robots, but then its just a battery operated dinosaur doll like the Hasbro's Furreal Snuggimals toy animals, it performs animal actions after you press that hidden button, but this Kota and Pals toy performs a dino action with sound. I'm not sure if the Kota and Pals are available, the only version that I saw are the Kota and Pals Hatchlings, baby dinosaurs, saw it first in Hobbes n' Landes stores.
The lifesize version is an old model, like a real dinosaur as your pet, you can ride on it, play with it and consider it as your robotic pet dino.

here's the mini life size version

8. Baby Alive
www.babyalive.com
P1.5k - P4k
Baby Alive is so popular and thanks to the tv ad that are being played in all kids channel on cable tv. There are lots of Baby Alive models, the 1st is just a regular baby that cries, laugh and feed, other hard core models can talk, move its mouth and even pee. The style of this toy is a classic, there are lots of version came out during the 90's but this version is much better, because the old ones back them are not battery operated.
The price of each Baby Alive depends on the version and model.

9. Darth Vader voice changer mask (new ver)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Star-
P1.5k
Toy Kingdom
One of the top 1 toys that I should own this Christmas, I hope my wife reads this ahhahaha. The new version of Star Wars character masks with voice changer features. Most popular to Star Wars fans are the Darth Vaders face mask, I think this mask is the most sellable mask in some toy stores, there are other mask like the Clone Trooper, General Grievous and Tie Fighter pilot.
The mask can help you change your voice in seconds and also playback some of the famous quotes and lines of Darth Vader from the movie Star Wars.

10. Zero Gravity Lazer Air Hog RC
airhogs.com/
pic via chipspain.com and kimmyshop.com
P3k
Being an RC car fan, and want to collect some of the coolest and hightech rc cars, this Zero Gravity Lazer by Air Hog is the coolest RC car ever! the car can run and stick itself into walls and ceiling, it runs like a normal RC car but they are like the car for Spider-man. The Rc car is very light and got one engine that uses the power of air suction, it sticks to flat surface of a wall, and uses a guided lazer tech from the remote controller as its main control. Point the laser in the wall and the rc car will follow it.
Same as the Solar rc car, this one uses its own rechargeable battery, and after an hour of charging from your electric socket, it can give a 15-20 min. pure wall climbing car madness.

My visit and lessons learned from the Toy Kingdom - great holiday toy sale
I like to attend bazaars and super sale or discount events, but the only event that I always avoid every year is the Toy Kingdom sale events, like their annual warehouse sale in Megamall. I don’t like to go there and buy toys in low prices, but the idea is okay for me in having a massive super toy sale in one big venue, but there are lots of pressure that you will encounter through it and one of it is to line up in a long queue of customers lining up infront of the cashier, we experience this at the recent Toy Kingdom- the great holiday toy sale. I thought that I will escape the toy sale madness, but its just the thing that I can’t avoid especially when my wife knows about it and the idea here is to buy toys for our kid with the right budget we have for toys.
I didn’t brought money with me, because I already know the chaos happening inside the toy sale event. But then I was wrong after all, the crowd is calm and the flow of customers are very organized. There were times that push carts blocks our way and it clogs the hallway up to the end of the other hallway. Also, not just shopping carts, but also strollers and kids roaming around riding mini bikes. It was an eye opener for us that bringing a kid riding in a stroller during a busy bazaar is not a good idea, then we decided to get out of the venue and head to another bazaar happening in the other side of the city.
more story and photos below
I learned a new lessons here and I told my wife also that buying toys with low prices and discounts are very common, because these low prices are also present in the malls. But I have found some toys on display that have the 70% less discount, but the items are not that so cool, and most toys displayed here are not the popular brands. There are some popular brands and toy line like the Transformers, Johnny Lightnings toy cars, and baby- toddler toys. There’s also Lego toys with 30% only but not the new and popular ones, there are lots of RC helicopters and cars with super slash prices. We started to look for Disney Cars toys but then we didn’t succeed, but other merchandise are also available.
Here are some of my tips if you plan to visit a Toy Kingdom toy sale (even the warehouse sale or this holiday toy sale event)
1. Ask yourself first if you are very serious in buying toys for your kids, or toys as a gifts for your friends, nephews, niece, god child, etc. But if the answer is yes and you have a budget to buy toys as gifts for Christmas, then this event is for you, because toys sold here are in super discount and hoarding lots of it will save you lots of money. But if you plan to buy 2-3 or even 5 toys, then my advice is that you go to the nearest toy store in the mall, because sometimes they sell the toys there with the same low price.
2. Set up a budget for yourself if you plan to buy a load of toys for Christmas as gifts. Think of a budget like Php 3k for your child and Php 2k budget for gifts. If you have many kids, then I suggest that you raise the budget and balance it wisely.
3. If you will bring your child to a busy toy sale event, make sure that you have lots of company with you that can help you buying the toys, carry your kid, or even push the stroller. Its fun to shop around with our kids, especially when it comes to toys. Make sure that you are looking after them because kids are so fast and they can run and transfer to other store looking for their favorite toys. Its hard to look for your kid if they get lost, the venue is crowded by people and toys, so if you lost your child, then proceed to the security guard at the exit and alert them that your child is missing inside the venue. Its great also if you designated a meet up with your kid incase they got lost, for example that you guys can meet at counter 23 in case they got lost. Try to look for any paging service in the venue so that they can announce and call for your kid to approach you. Let them remember that they should not talk to strangers or even go with them, if there’s a staff or security guard in the venue, tell them to approach it and bring them to the paging system or holding area were they can be found easily out of the crowded venue.
4. Always check your belongings, sometimes there are advantageous criminals roaming around a crowded venue. They snatch cellphones, wallets, and other stuff inside your bag when you are busy. Be alert and always place your bag infront of you. Never leave your bag inside the shopping cart, if you do that, you should not leave the shopping cart and guard it at all times.
5. I noticed that some parents leave their kids sitting (or even sleeping) inside the shopping cart. It’s a funny sight that I saw a kid girl sleeping inside the cart and infront of her is a big boxes of toys. I felt sad when I saw that and got worried, its dangerous to leave your child sleeping inside the shopping cart filled with toys and the child is under it. If you don’t have a stroller, then carry your child, or ask your companion to wait for you outside and then carry the child when they are sleeping. Its okay to stay outside the venue and just to keep them safe.
6. When we entered the venue with our baby Ash riding in his stroller, I noticed that his hands are so busy touching the people around him, I saw him grabbed a toy from other people’s cart, it was a funny moment that the mommy saw it too, and just laughed at it. I told my boy not to take those things, the stroller is a hassle to everyone, so I carried my boy after, because its dangerous to roam around with a baby in a stroller inside a crowded bazaar even, people might accidentally hit my child with those basket carts or even hit his legs or arms.
7. Don’t let your child ride the bike inside the bazaar! And play with it… I saw a kid roams around the hall and I saw a little girl riding that ride on vehicle, that thing is so small and you might tripped if you didn’t saw it in the middle of the crowd.
8. In this toy bazaar event, its like having a working team with your family, you can designate a part of your family to line up to the cashier with an empty cart and then the others roam around the toy stalls and grab toys, you may place the toys to your cart and then go back to the toy stalls if you missed something, then do a substitute and switch task with them by let them grab toys too and you guard the cart and line up for the cashier.
9. If you like the toy so much and found out that it is battery operated, you should ask the store attendant to help you check if the toy has a working condition. Most toy sale events they also sell those toys having damaged boxes or containers, there are some reasons why other toys have low prices, because the packaging is damaged and it doesn’t look new. But if you see the toy inside, all brand new and untouched or unused. But it is better to double check if the toy still activates with new pairs of batteries.
10. I noticed that Toy Kingdom toy sale runs for two or three days, they reserved the 1st day of the event exclusively to card holders, like the BDO credit card, SM Advantage Prestige cards and the Toy Kingdom card. If you don’t have these cards yet, then you grab it while they still offer it. The card can be useful sometimes in gathering points for every purchase you made in SM malls, and also serves as an exclusive pass to 1st day sale events like this Toy Kingdom sale.
I’ll end my tips and lessons here for the moment, I’ll add more if I ever something comes out from my mind.

the crowd inside SMX, I just noticed that there are many people here shopping for toys, the other SMX halls are holiday sales of other brands, super crowded too. I noticed that all people attended this sale event and instead of visiting the 11th World Bazaar Festival in World Trade.
This sale runs for three days only. (it ended today) I saw that Angry Birds and Cars are the most displayed things in every sale and bazaar events. (lots of knock offs too)

lots of scooter and play pad on sale

Warriors of Virtue toyline slash price to Php 50 per action figure / here are the shopping carts

our hunt for baby and toddler toys begins here

here we found that electronic airplane, my baby boy loved it and it has price tag of P200. But we drop the toy there and decided not to buy bec. of the long lines to the cashier, we found the same toy in 11th World Bazaar festival, for sale at Php 250. The ice cream maker is selling like pancakes at the Toy Kingdom sale event, they say that its a toy but it can be used in making ice cream.

this rescue vehicle toy looks like a Playmobil toy / here's my wife and baby boy Ash looks on a bigger electronic airplane priced at P350

saw a store with lots of old GI JOE figures....I pass and decided not to look huuhuhuuhu
This wooden toy is cool..price at P2k

Transformers toys on sale! I checked on the prices and its the same price that they gave in the malls. P800 is the lowest sale.

I want to buy this remote controlled airplane, although that it is made of styro and has its own engine, the super discount price of P200 is not bad!
here's a photo of the entrance at SMX

I spotted SpongeBob mascot.. me and Ash approaches to get a quick photo op, then I noticed that this SpongeBob is not the official mascot or whatsoever.. then I realized that maybe someone cosplaying as SpongeBob got hired to have an appearance here at the SMX.

Toys e-catalog for Christmas
This is an e-catalog that I found on net after reading some local e-mags online, the catalog is a perfect guide on what kind of toys you want for your kids. I found lots of interesting toys and I love to own one of those Cars ride-on, its a perfect toy for Ashton, since he now loves cars and anything that are automobiles. The e-catalog is from a mall in the US and it serves as a guide and checklist of items with tag price that will be offered this Christmas. I'm going to check out our catalog of our local toy stores here and see what toys they offer for this coming holiday season.
new toy: Solar powered RC car
I'm going to post a review and feature soon. I bought this RC car last night in Toy Kingdom SM Megamall.

Toy Museums in the Philippines and in other countries
I remember that I started building my own toy museum inside my room at home, that was around my high school to early college years, I also started in creating my own library and bought those books about astronomy and zoology, but I failed after being hooked to video games, toys and comic books, having a toy museum is a dream come true for everyone who loves toys and pop culture items on display, and its an apple in our eyes every day when we woke up in the morning and look at our collection and sometimes it takes out our stress and let these plastic and metal figures absorb those bad auras.
(MORE STORY BELOW)
Our room became like a toys and comic store ( too bad I don’t have a photo of it) because I display all of our action figure collections in our wall and also displayed my sister’s Barbie collection on the other side. The collection and plan for displaying more toys stopped when I started in my young adult life and focuses on the wonders of the internet
There are lots of discussions way back about a group of people or individual who plan to have their own toy museum, and everyone predicted that the 1st ever toy museum in the Philippines will be a sure hit, but no one dared to start their own, Even my group at ToyCon wants to create one, but we don’t have budget for it, but I’m sure all toy collectors, especially the hard core collectors have their own PRIVATE toy museum in their house or rooms. I discovered some of their collections when they were featured on TV and even celebrities have an awesome toy collection, I can’t believe that one of them is former Senator Freddie Webb, Sex bomb girl Rochelle Pangilinan and even Tv news person Julius Babao is a hard core collector of vinyl art toys. I also seen some of my friends who transformed their rooms into their own museum, I have seen Earl Madriaga’s Star Wars collection years ago and it was a jaw dropping experience to be inside his room, imagine that all stuff in there are all Star Wars, from toys to bed sheet up to a Princess Leia toothbrush and R2D2 toothpaste, I also saw Ricky Tinio’s toy attic, his very own private toy museum where he collects all kinds of action figures. (saw it via photos only), and then I saw Mark Santos’s friend created a robot museum and also Mark stored his own collection there as a storage base of his collection for Robot Pilipinas. We also have a comics museum, like Gerry Alanguilan’s Philippine Komiks Museum, he started only online and then he converted his home into a mini museum for Philippines comics and we also have a Darna Museum created by Herbert Chavez in Laguna. Galeng di ba? I’m very happy that these people have lots of passion of creating their own museums, and I know that everyone can do it too. Now I’m building my own mini toy museum, and I’m sure that when my son grows up, he will help me run our museum here at home.
But we’re looking for a toy museum that is opened to the public, were we can visit it in a regular basis and with educational value to kids and adults. Collecting toys and restoring the old toys to its mint condition or nearly perfect form is a must if you plan to show to the public what kind of toys that came out on the yester-years. Here in the Philippines, I have known some that are open to the public, first was Yexel’s Toy Museum years ago, he organizes a toy museum in a mall and he volunteered to share his toys and lifesize figures in a public viewing event that happened in a month, but then after the success of the exhibit, he decided to create his own museum inside his home and it will be opened soon this 2012. Then I found Jimmy Madarang’s own toy museum, and I’m surprised that the toy museum is available to the public with a P70 entrance fee, he invites schools and families to check out and visit his toy collection, Jimmy is one hard core collector, model kit builder and a good toy restorer. I’ve seen him and his toys on TV but I didn’t know that it is opened to the public, I’m going to have my schedule soon to visit his “Wow Toy Musuem”. We also have the toy gallery section of the ToyCon event, we have that only every month of June and its one awesome attraction we have for our toy convention.
It’s cool that we have some people who volunteered to organizes this with their own money and no backer or support from our local government, if you’ll look at the toy museum in Singapore, Japan and Hong Kong, they do have government support from their tourism offices, but here in our country is just a start and I know that we’re going to have that support from our local government SOON, but its better to act on our own and instead of waiting for them to support us.
I created a list here of various toy museums in South East Asia and other countries and If you have been there to these museum, feel free to share your experience here in our comment board.

When most of the TV Host and their crew saw the toys, their first word was Wow!, and when families have visited/toured our Toy Museum, again their first reaction was again Wow! so we decided to name our Museum as “Wow Toy Museum”.
Last January 22, 2011, a pre-school “Kids R Us” visited us. When the school Principal, Teachers, Parents, and their Student have visited our Toy Museum. Again their first reaction was “WOW”, so now we know that many people are really interested in seeing our collection!
Wow Toy Museum's aim is to teach our children in a more traditional way. It will teach them to cherish these old & new toys. It will teach them how to collect, as they grow old it will teach them how to maintain and even how to fix and restore these collectible toys, without knowing it they already applying it into there adult life.
When you visit our Wow Toy Museum, you will see many detailed miniatures and also many large colored posters. Children and adults will learn the evolution of different things like the development first car to the present, the first boat, the first airplane, houses and so on etc. In addition, we have also displayed the evolution of Paper and Coin of our Philippine money as early as 1907. These are just some of the things you can learn at our exhibits: the skills needed to draw, about scale models, about electricity and lights, about motors and mechanical devices, sculpture, solar, wind, hydro and renewable energy. Who knows, maybe these toys will awaken the future scientists and inventors in us.
It is our hope to teach and mold our children's future by exposing them to the toys that taught us before. School Administrator, school officials, Teachers are welcome to visit us and see for yourselves. We can schedule for school field trips. As of December 2010, entrance fee is now lower to only: PHP 70.00 per head (to cover our expenses of the electricity like, aircon, electric fan & lights, maintenance crews etc.)
It’s sad that these old toys are getting rarer and harder to find. The Madarang Wow Toy Museum has a few hundred and is able to restore some of it. Some are now on display and every week, we are adding more new and rare vintage items. For those who cannot visit us, you can search and check us on the internet by using google or yahoo search engines & search for Wow Toy Museum- Madarang Philippines, so you’ll be able to see some of our photos and you can also go to my youtube account ‘jgcm54’ to see my video on animated toys. You can also see the entire TV program that has featured our Wow Toy Museum plus other videos on how to restore an old toys.
Recently, On 8-22-11 Nuestra Senora De Aranzazu Parochial School in San Mateo Rizal & 8-24-11 Westminster High School Honorio Lopez Tondo Manila have there fieldtrip to our Toy Museum & we have them video & uploaded on our U-tube account, many thanks to all of them!!!
