comics: DC 52: Justice League #1 Review

justice-league-1-full2
by blog contributor Dorkour

Super heroes band together to fight menacing threats. But for DC’s rebooted universe’s Justice League, they come together to fight bad economy – the steady decline of comic book sales. In order to curb this downtrend, DC rebooted the continuity for the nth time to attract new readers. 52 comic books were reset so that new readers can catch up. The banner title of the set, Justice League, was the first to come hot off the press.  (MORE STORY BELOW)

The book boasts of Green Lantern master storyteller, Geoff Johns and 90’s wonder talent, Jim Lee. The team of creators in itself is an intriguing entry point for avid fans. Johns brings to the table an evolved comic book story telling style while Jim Lee harkens to the awesomeness of bursting muscles and bust lines of the 90s.

The way Justice League book 1 rolls out is an intriguing choice for launching the entire DC Universe Reboot. It features a flashback that shows some of the League’s major characters and one, Cyborg, seemingly coming out of the woodworks. And immediately, you’ll get a feel that this Justice League is not the team of the yesteryears. The heroes are not fully embraced as shown in how Batman and Green Lantern got acquainted. Their mini-adventure leads to the duo in Metropolis and encounters the inevitable – Superman.

Justice League book 1 is a topsy-turvy ride. It had its moments and then some. It’s written in an open way that it can divide readers. Some might find it intriguing that there are a lot of openings for future opportunities. Some might find it lacking for not having that sense of purpose in the plot. Despite it being only the first book, one might find it hard to grasp why is there a need for a collage of super powered beings. The threat of Dark Seid is an instant hook for old readers. But it’s hardly any cause of concern for new ones. It still doesn’t have the singular message that Marvel’s Avengers hold on to – When one hero cannot defeat a greater menace, they assemble. Geoff Johns missed out on the opportunity to seed a Justice League credo. Here’s to thinking that there is a greater purpose to that but this is your first book, open with a bang.

A good point of the book is the inclusion of Cyborg. He’s never been on a Justice League team before. And in a poetic way, he represents the new readers. Perhaps he is part of the team to help give readers the affinity to keep them hooked.

The first book is a fun start. But it needs to show seeds of piquing the human interest to bring in the new readers. This is what Marvel does best. Using their movies, they strike a chord in the people’s emotion. Thus bringing the characters closer to heart and making them relevant. Just look back at the loveable renegade in Thor, the pure hearted man-out-of-his-element Captain America, and the flawed Tony Stark. They are humans first, then beings with above human capabilities next.

The artwork is a blast from the past. Jim Lee’s art never held back on details. And that is quite obvious in Justice League. To a fault sometimes. The awkward paneling and excessive lines is like Chris Bachalo’s Steam Punk days. Impressive. But it doesn’t aid the storytelling.

Birthing pains are as constant as reboots. DC knows this the best. The first book has its flaws but it doesn’t mean it’s not a fun read. And if there’s one writer who can turn things around, it’s Geoff Johns. Justice League might have taken off with a shaky start but never discount its true worth - the first book of a potentially good series.

DC’s fight for relevance has just begun and it’s going to be a long battle. That in itself is a worthy plot to follow.

Hands on test with a SMART Netphone

P8314715

Last night was the press briefing for the launch of the SMART Netphone and now lots of units are released to the public for them to test and try the SMART Netphone at the PLDT-SMART Jump Experience Center in Cyberzone, SM Megamall. I arrived late at the press briefing and I already caught the Q and A session with the SMART team and the media. I want to test the phone myself and I'm glad that they have lots of units in store for everyone, the Jump Squad supervisor Bernie approached me and then she showed me a little walkthrough on the phone, we tested two units, one for her and one for me, I finally got the chance to test it myself and the phone is very okay and user friendly. (MORE STORY BELOW)

Now I'm starting to think if this will click to the pinoy mobile phone fans, esp. to those who want to own a touch screen android phone, I didn't have any touch screen phone so I'm a little excited about the release of SMART Netphone in all stores this Sept. 10, but I did tried and tested lots of touch screen phones of different brands and I can tell if the touch screen reacts in an accurate way.

For this SMART Netphone, the touch sensitivity of the screen is smooth and I noticed that there's no delay after clicking a button, I also tried the QWERTY keypad screen function and I saw that the buttons are so small but the worry of my big fingers are gone when I started typing and I just got two mistype letters when I composed a message "The quick brown fox..." , The keypad inputs has three kinds, the QWERTY, the ABC and I saw a third one that has the key QW, like a qwerty keypad but two letter per button, its a new keypad function for me but I didn't tried typing on it.

The home screen menu is just like those android type of phones, and I'm glad that it didn't follow the same iPhone, LG and Samsung home screen with lots of buttons, or shall I say iPhone like button home screen. The home screen looks like a Nokia and a HTC, but I love the display and it is very simple and you can add more widgets on the next desktop, I'm not sure if you can add more desktop screen, but I count it and there are around 5 desktop screens.

The home screen shows this tab with your own number flashed on the screen and the amount balance you have for your phone, the amount balance will update in real time whenever you use your phone in texting, calling and net surfing, for post paid subscribers, it will work the same display. The good perk of this phone if you will buy it today is that the phone will serve free internet connection via using the SMARTNet service, an internet free network by SMART, to its SOCIAL MEDIA STREAM app, that means that there will be free posting and reading of live Tweets and Facebook updates, and also you can chat via YM and Facebook, according to the SMART team, that this free internet service will be offered till December 2011, and I'm not even sure if they will add more app service, because checking your email and surf the net out of the social media stream will charge you with data plan rates. And I heard that maybe in the future they can add Gtalk and other social networking connection via the SMART Net.

The SMART Net also is like your automatic feed update, all updates and promo offered by SMART will be downloaded to the netphone, it will be just the content and no additional fees required, all free! And its just like updating your gadget's firmware. And there's no longer need in keying in codes if you want to avail txt or call promo offers, because at the SMART Net option, you can choose on the menu on what kind of promo offer you want to available and in one click, you can get the promo and the payment for the promo will be deducted automatically to your load, whenever a new promo comes in, SMART Net will just update the list and inform you of the live updates via the SMART Net.

You can also disable the SMART Net if you want to save battery or want to connect directly to available Wifi or 3G and HSPA network.

Phonebook storage - this is cool and new for me, (I know that this feature is also available on other phones) we no longer worry on the phone book limits of the phone, here in the SMART Netphone, all your directories will be stored securely in a cloud and it can hold a lot of directory and data for you, so space for the phone directory is unlimited, I think this service is under the SMART Net on which it connects to the cloud system and it will be available for you to check and read it anytime.

I haven't tried doing some multi tasking thing on the netphone, but I know that its processor with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600Mhz MSM7227 (S1 Class) can perform like those other touch screen phones with the same Android 2.2 Froyo OS. Its so light and small, slim and very classy look for a price at P9,900.

I'll post more updates soon if ever we can try some apps and surf the phone.

you can know more or pre order the phone here at http://smart.com.ph/netphone/tour.htm

I thought that Icould do things
All by myself
But now I know

Quick Delivery now accepts Globe Gcash payment for food order

P8172044

This is a great news again from Globe Gcash as they are now in partner with Quick Delivery to give an additional service to their customers and subscribers. Ordering food will be easy now and by ordering food via phone with Quick Delivery and payment mode is on Globe Gcash, you will never worry in paying your ordered food and avoid lining up infront of the ATM Machine or you are just lazy to go down from your office building or go out of your home to encash money from a bank, and with this new service, all of it will be transacted with some keystrokes and the power of Globe GCash, but before that, you need to make sure if you have emoney loaded to your GCash wallet, but if you have a Union Bank account, you can easily transfer funds to your Gcash and use the emoney in paying it to Quick Delivery. (MORE STORY BELOW)

The big announcement was unveiled few weeks ago and I’m there at the press briefing, it is a big move for Globe GCash to expand and improve their emoney transfer and payment mode via Globe Gcash mobile, having lots of merchants that accept the emoney payment service is great, because carrying ATM or Credit card will be lessen , and cellphones and some SMS will do the work for us in paying everything we buy.

For Quick Delivery, they have a big partnership with 200 restaurants and they deliver food to over 480 locations across Manila. If we have a good convenience in ordering food, we should have also a convenient way of paying it, and here comes Globe GCash to help us process the transaction.

Here’s how the system goes in ordering food and paying it with Globe GCash

1. Call Quick Delivery number and order food, call 2121212

2. you can also log in to their site at www.quickdelivery.ph

3. Order food and select Gcash payment mode

4. When you call via phone, you will give your Globe number to the operator so that they can process your payment via Globe Gcash

5. After sending it, you will receive a notification that Quick Delivery will deduct this amount of money from your Gcash, at first you should know how much is your bill.

6. Confirm the deduction by entering your Globe Gcash MPIN

7. Upon confirmation, your food will be delivered from 30min to 1 hour, depends on the food you order and location.

8. Take note that delivery hours starts from 10am up to 1030pm, 7 days a week

I also inquired via the Q and A portion of the press briefing, I asked how can I deny access if total amount of payment is incorrect, the answer they gave me is that I should not reply with my MPIN and call back Quick Delivery to fix error, and if ever I confirmed the payment and later on I found out that the total is incorrect, I can call in the Globe Gcash customer service to help me bring back the emoney that was paid over.

Globe GCash and Quick Delivery also mentioned that they can accept both process of payment in partial cash and emoney and if the food you ordered is below P300 theres an automatic additional of P65 for the delivery charge, but if your food order is beyond P300, the delivery is already free.
