TFT: Kris Kristofferson

Not every song thatwill be featured here will be what is generally considered as being “Christian”in the eyes of this world.  For some willbe anguished cries from the pit of despair, and others will be quite obviouslyferverent rants of rebellion. Nonetheless, be assured that they will all be of our Heavenly Father (inone way or another) and I hope that you have been given ears to hear themessage.

To Beat The Devil
Kris Kristofferson
A couple of yearsback, I come across a great and wasted friend of mine in the hallway of arecording studio.  And while he wasreciting some poetry to me that he’d written, I saw that he was about a stepaway from dyin’ and I couldn’t help but wonder why.  And the lines of this song occurred tome.  I’m happy to say he’s no longerwasted and he’s got him a good woman. And I’d like to dedicate this to John and June, who helped show me howto beat the devil.

It was winter timein Nashville
Down on music cityrow
And I was lookin’for a place
To get myself outof the cold
To warm the frozenfeelin’
That was eatin’ atmy soul
Keep the chillywind
Off my guitar
My thirsty wanted whisky
My hungry neededbeans
But it’d been ofmonth of paydays
Since I’d heardthat eagle scream
So with a stomachfull of empty
And a pocket fullof dreams
I left my pride
And stepped insidea bar
Actually I guessyou’d call it a tavern
Cigarette smoke tothe ceiling
And sawdust on thefloor
Friendly shadows
I saw that therewas just one old man
Sittin’ at the bar
And in the mirror Icould see him
Checkin’ me and myguitar
And he turned andsaid
Come up here boy
And show us whatyou are
I said I’m dry
He bought me a beer
He nodded at myguitar and said
It’s a tough lifeain’t it
I just looked athim
He said
You ain’t makin’any money are you
I said
You’ve been readin’my mail
He just smiled andsaid
Let me see thatguitar
I’ve got somethinyou oughta hear
Then he laid it onme

If you waste yourtime a-talkin’
To the people whodon’t listen
To the things thatyou are sayin’
Who do you think’sgonna hear
And if you shoulddie explainin’
How the things thatthey complain about
Are things theycould be changin’
Who do you think’sgonna care
There were otherlonely singers
In a world turneddeaf and blind
Who were crucified
For what they triedto show
And their voiceshave been scattered by
The swirlin’ windsof time
‘Cause the truthremains
That no one wantsto know

Well the old man wasa stranger
But I’d heard hissong before
Back when failurehad me locked out
On the wrong sideof the door
When no one stoodbehind me
But my shadow onthe floor
And lonesome wasmore
Than a state ofmind
You see
The devil haunts ahungry man
If you don’t wannajoin him
You got to beat him
I ain’t sayin’ Ibeat the devil
But I drank hisbeer for nothin’
Then I stole hissong

And you still canhear me singin’
To the people whodon’t listen
To the things thatI am sayin’
Prayin’ someone’sgonna hear
And I guess I’lldie explainin’
How the thing thatthey complain about
Are the things theycould be changin’
Hopin’ someone’sgonna care
I was born a lonelysinger
And I’m bound todie the same
But I’ve got tofeed
The hunger in mysoul
And if I never havea nickel
I won’t ever dieashamed
‘Cause I don’tbelieve that
No one wants toknow

This Old Road
Kris Kristofferson
Look at that oldphotograph
Is it really you
Smilin’ like a babyfull of dreams
Smilin’ ain’t soeasy now
Some are comin’true
Nothing’s simple asit seems
But I guess youcount your blessings
With the problems
That you’re dealin’with today
Like the changin’of the seasons

Ain’t you come along way
Ain’t you come along way
Ain’t you come along way down
This old road

Lookin’ at a lookin’glass
Runnin’ out of time
On a face you usedto know
Traces of a futurelost
In between thelines
One more rainbowfor the road
Thinkin’ of thefaces in the window
That you passedalong the way
Or the last thingyou believed in

Ain’t you come along way
Ain’t you come along way
Ain’t you come along way down
This old road

Say you tried tochase the sundown
And you let it slipaway
And the holy nightis fallin’

Ain’t you come along way
Ain’t you come along way
Ain’t you come along way down
This old road

Look at that oldphotograph
Is it really you
